Pre- and Post-Conference Tours
Optional Field Trips

Puerto Rico was selected because of its exceptional environment relevant to astrobiology research. We will organize several pre- and post-conference activities with a special scientific emphasis, patterned after the very successful Bioastronomy 2004 post-conference field trips. Preliminary site descriptions follow:

Arecibo Observatory and Down Under in Camuy Caves
The Arecibo National Observatory is the site of the world's largest single-dish radio telescope. The Observatory is recognized as one of the most important centers in the world for research in radio astronomy, planetary radar and studies of the upper atmosphere of the Earth. The site of the observatory, about 10 miles from Arecibo, Puerto Rico was selected in 1957 because of its southerly latitude, and, in particular, its remarkable geology which enabled great savings in the construction of the mammoth structure.

Camuy Cave Park, which hosts one of the world's largest cave complexes, carved over a million years ago by a tropical river which still runs through it. Located in NW Puerto Rico in karst topography, it is the result of dissolution of t he middle Tertiary limestone. The area is underlain by a thick sequence of platform carbonates. The Rio Camuy Cave Park features an array of caverns adapted to provide visitors with a safe and stunning visit. The caverns, which were formed by the flow of the Rio Camuy over one million years ago, is one of the largest systems of caverns in the Western Hemisphere. The excursion will take you through the 170 feet high Cueva Clara, where nature adorns its towering ceilings with crystalline stalactites, its walls with flowing stone tapestries and its floors with mounds of stalagmites. The Rio Camuy runs through the cavern's interior.

The best known location is at La Parguera on the southwestern end of the island, and the most spectacular bioluminescence is seen at Vieques island. More information.
