A. Cartoon of a borehole observatory installed in an overpressured hole drilled
through the sediments and into a basement topographic high (buried seamount). B. This is a cartoon of an early generation
CORK observatory where the basement fluids enter the borehole through perforated steel casing, and rise up to top of borehole
where they can be sampled at the top of the CORK. This provided an exciting early opportunity to sample unlimited volumes
of basement fluids…but with contamination issues.
