Mike Mottl is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography and a member of the NASA Astrobiology Institute.  In his 30-year career he has participated in 28 oceanographic research cruises and spent nearly three years at sea. He has made 22 deep ocean dives, to a maximum depth of 4000 m, in three different manned submersibles, and has worked extensively with remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs). His research interests include geochemical cycles, geochemical implications of plate tectonics, interaction of seawater with the oceanic crust, and fluids in subduction zones.
