Joseph Smyth is a Professor in the Departement of Geological sciences at the University of Colorado. He operates the Mineral Structures Laboratory. His research centers on the atmoic structures of natural materials and how these structures control the physical properties and distributions of elements in earth. His research areas include mineral physics and crystallography, igneous and metamorphic petrology and geochemistry, and he has done work on petrology models of the Moon and Mars. Some of his recent work focuses on searching for Earth's lost oceans, and geophysical and mineralogical constraints on H cycling in the Deep interior of the Earth.
