Young stars are believed to be surrounded with a disk of orbiting material. The material eventually condenses and forms planets and asteroids. In the case of a binary star, the companion sweeps away part of the material creating a cavity inside the disk. This is the first image of such a cavity. Light inside a small region surrounding the central binary star has been attenuated by a factor 1000. Intensity levels in the upper right boxes are 0.001, 0.0001, and 0.00001 that of the maximum central intensity.
