Far-IR SEDs of active and starburst galaxies 
& the Herschel Space Observatory

Recent progress on the issue of the far-infrared - submillimeter
spectral energy distributions of active and starburst galaxies is
reviewed. Focussing on extragalactic science, the prospects of
the ESA Herschel Space Observatory (formerly known as FIRST), to
be launched in 2007, will be discussed. The HSO will be the first
observatory-type space mission for the 60-670micron range
