The history of star formation in dusty galaxies Andrew Blain Caltech I will discuss some of the key issues for determining the evolution of the far-infrared luminosity in the Universe from submm surveys, especially the relevant selection effects and the importance and difficult of determining redshifts. `Photometric redshifts' from multicolor far-infrared data and radio-submm methods, and the potential of probing evolution using GRBs and future investigations of the submm sky using gravitational lensing, including weak lensing, will be discussed
