Mapping Local Galaxies with a Panoramic IFU: The SAURON Survey Roger Davies Durham Univ The SAURON Survey utilises a purpose built panoramic integral field spectrograph to map the kinematics and stellar populations of a representative sample of local early type galaxies as a function of luminosity, Hubble type and environment. I will briefly describe the instrument, discuss the motivation for the survey and the sample of galaxies selected. I will illustrate the unique advantages of integral field spectrographs for this work. By combining measurements of the age and metallicity of the stellar population with the comprehensive dymanical data I will show how the evolutionary history of galaxies can be determined.
