Title: King Kalekaua: The Versatile Monarch's Interest in Astronomy and 19th Century Technology Doug Knight ALU LIKE, Inc. Abstract: King Kalekaua was versatile in his knowledge of both traditional Hawaiian history and culture as well as an international outlook supporting science and technologies of the late 1800's. His interests in energy, military and naval architecture, astronomy, and telecommunications are = demonstrated through his scrapbooks, his circumnavigation of the World, and his "Education for Hawaiian Youths Abroad" program. The presentation will conclude with a brief description of ALU LIKE's technology internships at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the possibility of developing internships, REUs, and jobs with IfA. _________________ Doug Knight is Technologies Initiative Manager, at ALU LIKE, Inc., a native Hawaiian, non-profit agency. Doug has worked as part of the Vocational Education Program for ten years, where he has developed customized, industry-specific internships and training projects. He is an urban planner by background and has a special interest in building bridges between the traditional culture and science.
