Jeff Kuhn Michigan State University Dynmic Range (and how to get it): What do Galaxy Clusters, Planets, and the Solar Corona Have in Common? Several interesting astrophysical problems are not currently limited by telescope aperture. Generally, observational questions which require high photometric dynamic range are not more easily solved by bigger telescopes. Furthermore, the dynamic range inherent in modern optical CCD and IR array detectors may be squandered on poorly designed telescopes. Here we will briefly discuss a few problems where a well designed 4m-class telescope can outperform a conventional 8-m aperture telescope.
