Geoff Marcy, UC Berkeley Planets Around Other Suns A dozen planets have been found around GKM Main Sequence Stars, all revealed by Keplerian velocities of their host stars. Jupiter-Mass planets occur around 5% of stars within 2 AU, and their maximum mass is ~4 M_JUP. Brown Dwarf companions (M = 10-80 M_JUP) occur rarely (<1%). Planetary orbits are often smaller than Mercury's orbit and are generally eccentric. The formation history of giant planets probably includes viscous migration inward and planet-planet scattering.
