Title: Galaxy formation: successes and challenges for the standard cosmology Jim Peebles Princeton Abstract: The standard Big Bang cosmology passes a tight network of tests that show it is a useful description of the large-scale structure and evolution of the universe. But is this model, with its mysterious dark sector, adequate for the observational astronomy of the 21st century, or only the simplest approximation we can get away with at the present level of the evidence? If the latter it will be manifest as anomalies. I shall discuss the state of two apparent examples concerning dwarf galaxies in voids and giant galaxies at low redshifts. I plan to comment on possible remedies, but my main goal is feedback from the audience on how serious these apparent anomalies might be.
