Title: Hipparcos meets the thick disk

Abstract:
 One of the major issues raised by the high-precision astrometric
results provided by the Hipparcos satellite is the reliability of
the globular cluster distance scale, and cluster age determinations.
I will consider some aspects of those results and discuss how the
re-calibration of the clusters can be used to probe the properties of
the galactic thick disk.
