The Origins of Astronomy in Hawai`i

The seeds of astronomical studies were planted in
Hawai`i on a number of occasions. In some cases the
environment was not conducive to germination of the
seeds.  In some others the seeds germinated but failed
to flourish for lack of suitable sustenance.  Finally, a
seed was planted that germinated and fourished far
beyond anyone's dreams.  This is the story of that seed
during its germination and early development.
