Istvan Szapudi CITA Title: The Distribution of Galaxies in the Universe Abstract: The standard scenario of cosmological structure formation consists of the generation of initial density fluctuations in the early universe, subsequent linear and non-linear gravitational amplification, and finally, the physics of galaxy formation determining the sites of light emission. The latter are observable with earth and space based telescopes in several wavelengths. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the 2 degree field Survey will yield major opportunities to study the clustering of galaxies in unprecedented detail in the near future. With the state of the art statistical methods recently developed, these superb data sets will determine the nature of initial fluctuations, provide valuable information on the workings of gravity on large scales, as well as constrain the processes of galaxy formation.
