Abstract:

I will give a general overview of the 'diffuse x-ray
background': why is it called background, and why is it not a
background. I will discuss what this background really is, and how
to observe it. I will give a short discussion of the AGN
phenomenon, the different definitions and the unified AGN model.
I will show some new results of the AGN luminosity function and
I will also talk about future surveys and missions.
