| Using the British 1874 transit of Venus expedition to Hawaii in order to illustrate a number of important points, Michael Chauvin's presentation will focus on four elements of the transit story: 1. the. historical chase after the Astronomical Unit; 2. the professionalization of astronomy in 19th-century England; 3. the use of a camera in the 1874 transit proceedings; 4. the difficult job of "reducing the data" from the bewildering numbers that were gotten by various participants. |
