George Herbig: A Life in Science
Bo Reipurth

When George Herbig passed away on October 12th last year, a research career spanning 73 years came to an end. In this colloquium I will review the multi-faceted areas of astronomy to which George made major contributions, with a special emphasis on his work on young stars. George was widely recognized as the "father of star formation studies", having opened up the field with a series of in-depth studies of T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae/Be stars, FUors, Herbig-Haro objects, young associations and clusters, and much more. I will also touch upon the struggles George had to overcome - having grown up during the Depression era - before he could embark on his illustrious career.
