Astronomy 130
Fall 2009

Homework #3 due November 19, 2009

For more background on the Sun Dagger, visit the links to the Solstice Project and try out the Sundagger Explorer demonstration of the 3-d interactive application on that page. Take a look at the NASA Ancient Observatories web page and the linked Traditions of the SUN pages. We'll examine some of these other cultures over the next few weeks. Also, explore the Chaco Canyon Traditions of the Sun podcasts at the iTunes Store.

Take a look at the Stars Over Ancient Babylon movie. Other links on the Astronomy 130 Links page explore the pyramid alignments and the references to their construction. In particular, review Chapter 5 of Krupp's book, Echoes of the Ancient Skies, and examine pp. 171-175 on the calendar systems.

Another great video for the last section of our course is the NOVA progam, Cracking the Maya Code. Use the interactive feature links to explore the timelines and listen to the glyphs.

In addition to the NASA Traditions of the Sun podcasts at the links site, explore Ancient Observatory exhibits for Chichen Itza and at the Exploratorium's site.

This article by Anthony Aveni in the November/December 2009 issue of Archaeology describes the current thinking about an Apocalypse-free 2012.

Upcoming lecture, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 in Hamilton Library's Bridge Gallery: "Sacred Mountains and Astronomy" by Dr. Paul Coleman.
