120 is an introductory level course for non-science students with
no pre-requisites. It fills the Physical Science requirement at UH.
Astronomers are the ones who get to ask the big questions about cosmic beginnings. This course is designed to address the fundamental questions of our origins. These will include:
- Where did the stars come from?
- How were they formed?
- What is the origin of the Solar System and the Earth?
- How were the chemical elements like oxygen and calcium and iron formed?
- How did our Milky Way galaxy begin and evolve?
- How did the whole universe begin? and grow?
And, of course,
- How did life begin?
- Is there life elsewhere in the universe?
This course will be of interest to those students interested in the "Big Picture" of our origins. And to those with a philosophical bent and a curiosity about our place in the cosmos.
