Other Funding Sources
GSO travel grants
The UH graduate student organization (GSO) makes awards for travel to a meetings. Maximum is $1000 for travel to a meeting to present original results. An applicant who has received a previous travel grant is ineligible to reapply for future GSO travel grants. Proposals are reviewed three times a year:
Sigma Xi
The Sigma Xi scientific research society offers grants-in-aid of research of up to $2500. Deadline is March 15th. Applicants do not have to be members of Sigma Xi.
Amelia Earhart Fellowship
$6000 fellowships for women of any nationality. Deadline: November 15, can be renewed for a 2nd year.
Soroptimist International
Provides financial grants to women in the final phase of their doctoral degrees.
AAS career services
The American Astronomical Society maintains a long list of fellowships that are open to astronomers. Many are only for post-docs, but some are aimed at graduate students.
Association for Women in Science Graduate Fellowships
Luise Meyer-Schutzmeister Award of $1000, deadline in January. For women only.
NSERC (Canada)
Canadian students at UH may be eligible for NSERC funding.
National Physical Science Consortium
You have to be a U.S. citizen and either in your first year at the IfA, or returning from the workforce with no more than a master's. But the great thing is that it is possible to get funding for SIX years. They emphasize funding under-represented students, including women.
