IfA Hilo Outreach - Callie's Page
Callie joined the SEPO team in August of 2006 to gladly assist Gary in his mission to bring science and astronomy to the people. A senior at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, Callie plans on graduating in the spring of 2007 with a B.A. in Natural Science and Communications while completing a minor in Astronomy. Originally from Indiana, Callie moved to the Big Island in 2004 for an internship at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Since then she has transferred to U.H.H. and occupied a number of positions on Mauna Kea, including aircraft spotting for the Keck and Gemini Observatories, as well as an observatory night attendant at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility.
Callie loves to learn about science and culture, and wants to share her enthusiasm with the world. Eager to nurture a passion for film production, Callie plans on incorporating creative video projects into her work with the Institute for Astronomy.
When she isn't at school or involved in her outreach work, you can probably find Callie snorkeling at Richardson's Beach Park, building a house with her boyfriend, and hiking out to the lava flow to spend time with Pele.
Callie assists in coordinating and facilitating outreach activities and events on Hawaii's Big Island. Callie offers informal science educational programs that feature multimedia presentations and activities to school and community groups, and Mauna Kea tours for educational groups.
