The IMF in Starbursts

Starburst galaxies are presently forming massive stars at prodigious rates. The newly formed stars can be observed either directly, or indirectly via their energy release into the interstellar medium. What do we know about the properties of starburst populations? I will review relevant observational data to constrain starburst populations in HII galaxies, nuclear starbursts, and infrared luminous starburst galaxies. Properties I will address are the star-formation histories and the shape of the IMF, with particular emphasis on the high- and on the low-mass end of the mass function.
