IAU Symposium 234 was held in Hawaii in Spring 2006. It focussed on our current understanding of the origin and evolution of planetary nebulae and of PN populations; the key role that PNs play as multi-wavelength laboratories for our understanding of atomic, molecular, dust and plasma processes in diverse astrophysical environments; the means by which the wonderfully diverse morphologies of PNs are obtained; the influence of PNs on the interstellar media of galaxies, including chemical enrichment, and the ever-growing use of their narrow high-luminosity emission lines to probe the dynamics and mass distributions of galaxies and of the intergalactic medium of clusters of galaxies.
