------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Third Announcement* IAU Symposium No. 250 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MASSIVE STARS AS COSMIC ENGINES Grand Hyatt, Kauai, Hawaii, USA 10-14 December 2007 http:///www.ifa.hawaii.edu/iau250 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scope of the Symposium: ---------------------- The symposium will focus on how massive stars shape the Universe from the nearby Universe to high-redshift galaxies and the first generations of stars. Massive stars form in starbursts, pollute the interstellar medium (ISM), inject energy and momentum via their stellar winds and core-collapse supernovae (SNe), drive the ISM out of galaxies, polluting the intergalactic medium. Direct detection of massive stars (via the UV continua and spectral wind lines) and of the products of their nucleosynthesis provides some of the most stringent constraints on the physical properties of galaxies at high redshifts, whether identified via their emission at a variety of wavelengths or by the absorption they produce in quasar spectra. Within the past few years, a direct connection has been established between certain core-collapse SNe and Gammay Ray Bursts (GRBs), supporting the collapsar model in which the GRB results from the death throes of a rapidly rotating Wolf-Rayet star. Scientific Programme: -------------------- The oral scientific programme is now finalized (see below), and is divided between 25 invited review talks (30 + 5 min) and 32 contributed talks (15 + 5 min), as listed on the meeting website, plus a summary talk by Claus Leitherer. General Discussion sessions are available after each session. We ask all speakers to submit an abstract via the meeting registration page no later than 15 Nov 2007 for inclusion in the abstract booklet. We ask all speakers to provide us with their Powerpoint/OpenOffice or Keynote presentations, preferably via USB flash drives, in advance of their talk: at the end of the afternoon session for next-morning talks, and at the end of the morning session for the afternoon talks. Speakers for the first morning of the conference are asked to send us (e.g. via e-mail or FTP) their presentations ahead of the start of the conference. Your adherence to these requirements will be greatly appreciated to ensure a smooth transition between speakers. We will use our own Mac and Windows-based computers to test and run the presentations. No Linux support will be offered. The main conference room is located in the Grand Ballroom. An adjacent space, also part of the Grand Ballroom, will be used for poster viewing and for the morning/afternoon coffee breaks. A large number of poster presentations are also anticipated, whose titles/abstracts need to be entered via the meeting registration page no later than 15 Nov 2007 for review by the SOC. Due to space limitations we can only accept a single poster per participant (capacity may become available at the meeting for additional posters but this can not be guaranteed in advance). Please note that the symposium proceedings will include poster titles and abstracts submitted via the meeting registration page before 15 Nov 2007. Poster size limits are 2.7 x 4 feet = 80 x 120 cm = width x height. Prizes will be awarded to a poster from each scientific session, which will include (a) a brief oral presentation during discussion sessions (poster presenters may may wish to bring their poster on a USB storage device from which they could quickly produce a couple of slides); (b) an extended page limit in the symposium proceedings. The overall poster competition winner will receive a further prize. Programmes for specialist sessions Sun 9 Dec on `Massive stellar evolution at low metallicity' (9:30-13:00, organizer: Georges Meynet) and `Magnetic massive stars' (14:30-18:10, organizer: Richard Townsend) are also listed in the appendix below. Venue: ----- The symposium will be held in the Grand Hyatt Hotel http://kauai.hyatt.com/groupbooking/kauai2007astr which is located in the southern part of the island of Kauai, Hawaii, USA. Participants are expected to arrive on Kauai not later than Sunday 9 December, and to depart from Kauai not earlier than Saturday 15 December 2007. Participants wishing to take part in the specialist Discussion Sessions on Sunday 9 December will need to arrive on Saturday 8 December. All symposium participants will be lodged at the Grand Hyatt, since there are no other nearby hotels. The negotiated room rate is US$165 + 11.42% tax = US$183.84 per night. This is for single or double occupancy. This rate is valid from Dec 6 through Dec 16. Rates outside this period revert to the normal rates starting around US$400 + tax. To take advantage of the discounted rates remember to make your reservation by 10 Nov 2007 through the link available at the meeting website: http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/iau250/Hotel_Reservations.htm Please note that a 2 night deposit is charged immediately upon booking. We offer a roommate finder to help you locate persons to share your hotel room with: http://www.meetinhawaii.com/iau250/roommate/index.cfm When making your hotel reservation, you will notice that a $15 resort fee (per room per day) is automatically included. For our conference this fee (mandatory for all hotel guests) has been waived, but you still need to specify at *check-in* to remove that charge if you do not want to pay for it. The fee gives access to: local and toll-free phone calls, self and valet parking (self parking would be US$8/day, valet parking US$10/day), incoming faxes, newspaper, 1-hour per day at the tennis court, daily fitness access to the spa and 10% discounts on selected merchandise. The hotel will charge a mandatory porterage fee of $6.50+tax per person per stay (not per day). Wireless internet access to the rooms is US$14.95/day. We will provide wireless connectivity in the conference room, limited to 100 simultaneous users. A few computers will be available to provide internet access. Travel/Transportation: --------------------- The hotel is served by Lihue Airport (code LIH), located about 15 miles to the north. There are direct flights between Lihue airport and the US west coast (SFO, LAX), plus regular services to Honolulu (code HNL) on the island of Oahu, about 30 minutes flying time away. The Hyatt resort does not provide a shuttle service to/from the Lihue airport. Conference participants are therefore expected to either rent a car (the usual rental car companies are located just outside of the airport terminal) or hire a taxi for the 15-mile ride. If you wish to share a taxi with other participants, we encourage you to meet before calling a taxi: the driver will charge you one fare (around US$35) for the whole group. To facilitate in finding companions, we have established a 'taxi mate finder' service together with the roommate finder: http://www.meetinhawaii.com/iau250/roommate/index.cfm All participants, particularly those from outside of the US are advised to make travel arrangements as soon as is practical, to ensure the most economical airfares to/from Kauai. Note that the Honolulu marathon will take place on Sunday 9 Dec, so you may wish to avoid travelling through Oahu on 8 Dec. The state of Hawaii enforce strict rules upon the importation of fruit, plants and other agricultural items, so be prepared to open your baggage for x-ray machine inspection. Because of security procedures, applications for visas to visit the US may take longer to process than in the past. We strongly recommend applying for a visa as early as possible (at least 3 months before the visa is needed). It may take even longer for citizens of a few countries. Please check with your local US consulate or embassy to make sure that you apply early enough to avoid any problems. Registration Fee: ---------------- Registration by all participants, including invited speakers, LOC and SOC members is mandatory. http://www.meetinhawaii.com/iau250/index.cfm?fuseaction=register.start& If you have pre-registered, you should have received an email on 24 Sep 2007 regarding registration, payment of (i) US$250 conference fee (US$350 after 31 Oct 2007) which includes the opening reception, food and beverages during the breaks and a copy of the symposium proceedings, (ii) US$70 Conference banquet for participants and accompanying guests; (iii) US$45 Opening reception for accompanying guests only. Note LOC and SOC members are exempt from payment of registration fee. Payment may be made with credit cards (not American Express), processed securely through PayPal's website. When you are finished with your payment on the PayPal site, click on 'Return to Site' to receive a confirmation number for your transaction. Please save this information. The link provided on this last page allows you to edit the information you submitted. (If you cannot use credit cards to submit your payment, please e-mail iaus250@ifa.hawaii.edu). Opening reception: ----------------- The opening reception will be held from 7:30 to 9pm in the Grand Promenade, just in front of the Grand Ballroom, and in the adjacent Grand Garden. During the reception, appetizers will be served. One drink ticket will be available for each participant and paying guest (US$45). Additional drinks will be charged to the drinkers. Registration will be from 6-9pm on Sunday, Dec 9, in the Grand Promenade. (This appears to be a `Grand' Meeting!). All recipients of IAU grants (no more awards are anticipated at this time) will be reimbursed upon registration. Early registration will also be possible, prior to the special discussion sessions on Sunday between 9-10am and 2-3pm. Conference Banquet: ------------------ The conference dinner will take place on Thursday, Dec 13, 6:00-8:30 PM in the form of a luau, which features "authentic cuisine, dance, crafts and more". This event is subsidized by the IfA, and costs US$70 per adult. Meals: ----- There are several restaurants and lounges at the Hyatt. A complete listing, with business hours and menus (with prices), can be found at http://kauai.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/entertainment/restaurants/index.jsp Expect to be charged around US$10 to US$15 (+tax) for salads, soups or sandwiches, and US$25-$40 (+tax) for main courses. Breakfast is offered at various restaurants, from US$3.75 (single coffee) to US$27 (buffet). When purchasing food/beverages, please remember that a gratuity of 15% will be added, as well as a 11.42% tax (a total of 28%). There are virtually no low-cost restaurants located outside the Hyatt within reasonable walking distance. Not just massive stars: ---------------------- We hope you will enjoy the conference, as well as the beauty of the island of Kauai. The resort offers a nice beach, pools, and many on-site activities (golf, tennis, scuba lessons, flower lei making, ukulele lessons, coconut painting, live jazz, etc). For a taste of Kauai, you may want to take advantage of the free Wednesday afternoon. The hotel concierge can help you organize boat or helicopter tours to the Na Pali coast, whale-watching cruises, visits to Waimea Canyon, surfing, horseback and Harley-Davidson riding, sky diving, ultralight flying, car-crash testing, and even more. Car rental is available at the hotel. Proceedings: ----------- The proceedings will be published by the IAU publisher, Cambridge University Press, and edited by F. Bresolin, P.A. Crowther & J. Puls. Limits are 12 pages for invited review talks and 6 pages for contributed talks, to be submitted no later than 15 Jan 2008. Style files and instructions for auhtors can be found at ftp://ftp.sron.nl/karelh/UPLOADS/IAU-CUP.dir/authors.dir Poster competition winners from each scientific session will also be eligible for a 6 page limit - otherwise poster titles and brief abstracts submitted via the meeting registration page in advance of 15 Nov 2007 will be included in the proceedings. Submission details will be distributed at the symposium, at which copyright forms need to be completed and passed onto LOC staff. Strict deadlines will be enforced since the contract with CUP stipulates that proceedings are published within 6 months of the symposium. CUP needs three months for the production process, leaving one month for authors and the following two months for editors to complete their tasks. Deadlines: --------- 31 Oct 2007 Deadline for payment of US$250 registration fee (US$350 thereafter). 10 Nov 2007 Deadline for hotel reservations at reduced room rate. 15 Nov 2007 Deadline for abstracts for inclusion in meeting booklet (submitted via registration page). Poster abstracts to be included in proceedings. 09 Dec 2007 Specialist discussion sessions and welcome reception. 10 Dec 2007 Start of Symposium. 14 Dec 2007 End of Symposium. 15 Jan 2008 Delivery of final manuscripts from review and contributed speakers to the Editors (details upon registration).
