In September 2007, the IfA's new building on Maui, the Advanced Technology Research Center (ATRC), was dedicated as "Maikalani," which literally means "from the heavens" but also has the cultural meaning “things we gain from the cosmos.” It is a 15,000-square-foot, two-story facility that includes laboratory workspace for microfabrication, advanced metrology, and optical/infrared sensor development. It serves as the main support facility for Haleakala Observatories.
