Christopher Phillips - "Hawaiian Navigation by the Stars"

"Hawaiian Navigation by the Stars"

Christopher Phillips

Christopher Phillips of Hilo's 'Imiloa Astronomy Center introduces the art and techniques of traditional Hawaiian wayfaring.  Masters of navigation, the Polynesians used their extensive knowledge of the night sky to move adeptly through the Pacific.  Christopher describes the use of the traditional Hawaiian star compass and the star lines by which the Hawaiians mapped the sky.  Afterwards he joins us outside on our patio under Mauna Kea's magnificent night sky to explain the stories and names of the stars in traditional belief.
