2009 is the International Year of Astronomy!

400 years ago, Galileo Galilei was the first to use the telescope to look at the night sky. He was amazed at the sights the heavens showed...

The past four centuries have revealed a Universe of infinite complexity and wonder...telescopes have been the vessel of discovery on this journey.

Today, Mauna Kea is world-renowned as possibly the best place on our planet from which to study the heavens. Here, at one of the world's finest astronomical sites, we have telescopes set up over twelve hours a day, every day of the year, The public is welcomed to come view the wonders of the Universe with their own eyes.

From 9 in the morning until sun-down an 11-inch telescope, equipped with both an ultraviolet filter and a Hydrogen-Alpha filter, is trained on our favorite star, the Sun! From sunset until 10 pm, half a dozen or more telescopes are set up on our patio and pointed at all the wonders the night has to reveal:  planets, galaxies, nebulae, open clusters, globular clusters...if it's there we will try to find it.

In honor of this 400 year anniversary, we have been recording the people who come from all over the world to look through our telescopes.

See who these people are by clicking on the month below...

Here's to the journey of discovery!  May your skies be clear...
