MKO ComNet Working Group Meeting Minutes

Gemini Base Facility, Hilo

December 3, 1998

  1. Current Network Status
  2. There have been no problems to report.

  3. UH vBNS Proposal and other Updates
  4. Pui Hin reported that according to David Lassner, the prospect of the proposal being funded is very good. The grant will pay for a 6Mbps circuit between HP and UH-Manoa for 2 years.

Looking ahead to days after the HPC grant, when the group will need to ick up the cost of the link again, Pui Hin pointed out that:

As a result, we will be able to get good bandwidth at reasonable cost.

  5. ATM Support and Other Upgrades
  6. With the hotspare units paid for with Infrastructure funds, the cost of maintaining the common equipment per observatory will only be $500 more per year than it currently is. In view of this, and the fact that we do need a new router to utilize the forthcoming 6Mbps, Pui Hin proposed to go ahead and put in the backbone without waiting for commitment of the members. Members can join the new ATM network whenever their budgets allow. This was unanimously agreed to by all those present. As a reminder, IfA will buy, on top of the necessary common equipment, hot spares for a 7206 chassis and interface cards commonly used at the various observatories. Observatories must buy maintenance for their own routers to be eligible for using the hotspares.

On the upgrade of 10BASE2 to 100BASE-T HP, Pui Hin has found out from Ron Koehler that offices for the new facilties: Subaru, Gemini and SMA, will be constructed out of the current conference room and the janitor room next to it. Two sets of 2 twisted pair cables will be pulled into the current conference room and another set into the janitor room.

  7. Next Meeting
  8. Thursday, March 4, 1999, 10:00 a.m., at CFHT
