Current Network Status

UH-ITS rerouted the Mauna Kea connections to completely bypass Lisa. Since then, connection to I2 has been very stable in spite of the many software upgrades on the UH-ITS routers. The newly established alternate paths are working quite well. Connections to .com sites, on the other hand, have had lots of problems, largely because of AT&T on the Mainland.

Secondary DNS at HP

Pui Hin needs from each organization that wants to participate the following:
• Contents of their named.conf or named.boot for older version
• IP of their primary DNS
• Permission on their firewall and DNS for zone transfer

BugBear virus and other security issues at HP

Pui Hin received a request from Ruisheng Peng to ask everyone to check their PCs at HP for the Bugbear virus. CSO's printer at HP were affected but their PC was clean.

Pui Hin suggests revisiting subnetting of the HP subnet for better security. For quick implementation, organizations might consider buying inexpensive DHCP routers to hide PCs behind firewalls.

Spam and Virus Filtering

Everyone agreed that virus filtering should be sitewide, but spam filtering could be sitewide or individual. For virus filters, VirusWall and Sophos were two suggestions. For spam filtering, most favored spamassassin.
