Current Network Status

On April 21st, there were intermittent problems reaching the .com sites.

On June 1st, there was a widespread power outage on Oahu from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. The network was up most of this time on backup power. There were intermittent problems particularly around the times when power was switched to and from primary and backup sources.

Update of the SX TransPORT 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) links and extension to MK

Some progress has been made in the effort to connect the 10 Gigabit SX TransPORT to Waimea and to Hilo. Pui Hin is working with UH-ITS on the details.

Gigabit switched network for the MK Summit

Pui Hin has discussed the plan to upgrade the Summit network with Bob McLaren, and has learned that the project can be funded with Infrastructure funds. Pui Hin will proceed with procurement of the necessary equipment. As a reminder, the working group has -- during the last two meetings -- finalized a plan to phase out the ATM network and to replace it with a GE switched network. The total cost, including hot spares, will be ~$25,000. As the observatories' ATM routers get old, it will be more cost effective to replace them with multilayer switches than to try and maintain them or to replace them with similar equipment.

FY 06/07 Budget

Pui Hin presented the proposed FY 2006/07 budget with the following comments:

There is a small increase in the salary portion to cover the union negotiated pay raises.

Budget for travel is kept at last year's level; envisioning some travel to Waimea and Hilo for the work on the SX extension.

The deficit of $2,340 incurred last year due to the network upgrade at HP will be recovered through this year's charges.
