Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii, Institute for Astronomy, located in Pukalani, Maui. This position will be working on Maui and/or Oahu. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Minimum Monthly Salary:  $3,837

Duties:  Provides support for the Critical Design Phase of an Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) Instrument, which includes preparing and conducting laboratory tests and writing scientific documentation.  

Primary Qualifications:  

Education:   PhD from an accredited college or university in Physical Science or related field. (Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Science or related field and eight to ten (8-10) years of progressively responsible experience in designing and building complex optomechanical remote sensing instrumentation may substitute for a PhD.)

Experience:  One to three (1-3) years of experience in instrumentation, spectroscopy, and polarimetry as applied to solar astronomy, including successful design or construction of optical/IR instrumentation. One to three (1-3) years of experience with scientific writing or documentation.

Abilities/Knowledge/Skills:  Knowledge of optical techniques, data acquisition techniques, cryogenics, electronics, and analysis software environments. Demonstrated design skill for imaging, spectroscopy, or polarimetry instrumentation. Demonstrated writing and communication skills.
