Non-Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (up to 3 years), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) project, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Minimum Monthly Salary:  $3,416/Mon.

Duties:  Contributes to the design, development, construction, and installation of the ATLAS system to bring it to operational readiness. Participates in hardware and software development and installation. Assists with operating the system and performing research on the population of Near Earth Objects and other asteroids observed with ATLAS.  

Primary Qualifications: 

Education:   Ph.D. from an accredited college of in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:  Experience with hardware and software development for astronomical applications with wide-field CCD asteroid surveys. Experience with astronomical observational and reduction techniques. Proven record of research publications in refereed journals.

Abilities/Knowledge/Skills:  Understanding of issues involved in astronomical image analysis with respect to identifying moving objects (asteroids and comets). Understanding of computer network design. Proficiency in various software languages, including but not limited to: C, Fortran, Python, and Perl. Proficiency in MySQL. Proficiency in various operating systems, especially Unix/Linux. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical and/or Medical Demands:  Able to lift forty (40) pounds of computer equipment and other hardware. Post-Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post-offer high-altitude medical examination.
