The Deep Space
2 mission was a pair of new technology microprobes to ride on the
Mars Polar Lander. They were going to collect samples, search for
water, and perform a soil thermal experiment. Total cost $29 million.
These were lost with the Mars Polar Lander mission.
Mission Timeline
- Jan 03, 1999 - Launch from Cape Canaveral
- Dec 03, 1999 - Mars Landing - lost communication
- Dec 15, 1999 - Still no communication - MGS will image site to
look for the spacecraft.
