Return to Main TOPS

The Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking program (NEAT) is an autonomous observatory located on Haleakala in Hawaii. This program is a comprehensive survey for Near-Earth asteroids and comets.

IRTF Mission Support

  • Requirement of rapid observation of newly discovered NEOs to characterize their size, albedo and minearology. Not only are these objects potential hazards, but they are also potential resources for Earth.
  • Immediate followup - 1-5 micron spectra for surface compositon
  • Size, albedo, thermal inertia within 0.25 AU
