Andy Perala - Biography

Andy Perala is the Communications Specialist for the Keck Observatory. His duties include handling all media inquiries into the Keck Telescope project, writing press releases on the latest progress of the project and of scientific discoveries, and tracking all published and broadcast stories about the Keck to ensure that accuracy is maintained by the press. In addition, he responds to all written inquiries and requests for information, and keeps a library of current published stories. He also conducts VIP tours of the observatory, adn public tours of the Waimea headquarters.

He attended high shocol at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from Swarthmore College in 1979. Andy worked at the Anchorage Daily News from 1989 to 1992, where he honed his writing skills. While working there, he acted as sports reporter, Sunday Magazine writer, Metro reporter, features reporter, community editor and Weekend editor. In 1979 he was a member of the writing team that won a Pulitzer Prize for a series of stories documenting the link between alcohol and suicide in rural Alaska. He enjoys the fact that his job allows him to work with scientists who are working to push the extent of our knowledge of the universe.
