The grade for the course will be based on the following:
- One
Midterm Exam (20% of total
grade)
There will be one midterm
exam, given in class about half way through the course(see dates).
It will count 20% toward your total grade.
- A
Research Paper (25% of total
grade)
25% of your final grade will be assessed from a
research paper.
Topics will be announced in class. See here
for the due date. You are encouraged to read as widely as possible in
preparation for writing the paper, both from the reading list and from the suggestions for
further reading that are given throughout the website.
It is
particularly important that you reference all sources of information,
including websites, when you write your paper. Check back here for more
detailed guidelines.

Homework Related to
Class Discussions
(25% of total grade)
Reading and discussion of primary source material will be emphasised.
On the order of one class session every two weeks will be devoted to
discussion and analysis
of reading from supplemental background and primary source material. Part of your
grade will be computed from homeworks related to material covered in these
discussions.
- Final Exam (30% of total
grade)
The final exam will be given in
class (Wat 112) on May 10 from 12:00 to 2:00pm. It will cover all
the material of the course and will count 30% toward your total
grade. You must take the Final to get a grade in the course.
