Because the gas was thicker at early times, the strength of
the break deepens the further away the object lies, and this
can be used to estimate the distance of the GRB. The spectral
energy distribution of the GRB from the MAGNUM observations
is shown above. (This is just the observed flux versus wavelength.)
The transmission of the intergalactic gas is shown by the dashed
line and the position of the I filter by the dotted line. To
produce the observed break we find with 95% confidence that
the object must lie above a redshift of 6.08
This is consistent with the observed
Subaru spectroscopic redshift of 6.29.
