Exams
There will be 1 midterm in class. It will be a closed-book exam in short-answer format. Make-up exams will only be allowed for serious emergencies at the instructor's discretion and will consist of essay questions. You should contact me as soon as possible if you cannot be present for an exam. The Final exam will cover all the work of the course. You must take the Final to receive a grade in the course. No athletic-related absences will be permitted for the final exam. If there are schedule conflicts because of participation in organized sports, contact me well in advance of the last day of class. Bring a Number 2 pencil for the machine-readable forms. No one will be admitted to the exam once any student has left, so please be on time. Be prepared to show identification, if asked.

Quizzes
We may occasionally have brief quizzes (not all will be graded). to see how you are doing on a major topic covered in the week's lecture. In addition, you are asked to take the online quizzes at Mastering Astronomy as assigned. You may take an on-line quiz as many times as you wish before it's due date, and you will be credited with your highest score. If you take a quiz late, you will be credited with the first score you get, minus a 10% late penalty. The in-class quizzes are to see if you are keeping up with the material, and will test your understanding of the key concepts being covered. They will consist of no more than two questions requiring short (one- or two-sentence) answers. The total of all quizzes count towards 10% of your grade. Your lowest two quiz marks will be dropped in this calculation.

Announcements
Check here for any organizational notices. Changes in homework due dates or exam dates, changes in the reading assignments, and special events.

Class Participation
During class we will engage in occasional group activities and discussions, which may involve completing worksheets, or summaries on the results of hands-on experiments. These, and participation in web-based projects or planetarium exercises , will form part of your final grade.
Homework
Ten homework sets or web exercises will be handed out during the semester, and be due 1 week later at start of class. Homework must be turned in at the start of class on the day due for full credit. Credit will be reduced to 50 per cent of your score for homework one (class) day late, and no credit will be given for homework turned in later than that. The worst 2 of your homework grades will be dropped in the final grade. If you are absent and need to make special arrangements to receive or drop off copies of homework outside of class, please contact me or Mr. Dixon.

Class Notes
Brief summary notes for the lectures will be made available on the Web, as topics are covered.Topics related to material covered in class can be explored  here
