In September 2009 I was awarded the Karl Schwarschild Prize and Medal
by the German Astronomical Society. Traditionally, the recipient of the
prize delivers the Karl Schwarzschild Lecture at the annual meeting of the
Astronomical Society. The lecture is published in "Reviews in Modern
Astronomy" and - as a refereed paper - in "Astronomical Notes". Below is
the manuscript of my lecture in pdf-format.
