Shape of Moon's Orbit: Photographs

Use these images to supplement your own measurements when graphing the change in the Moon's distance with time.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/05/03 22:34.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/09/03 21:33. This image was made about 2 hours after full Moon; the entire globe was illuminated, so the angle of the scale didn't matter.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/11/03 22:17.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/13/03 23:56.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/16/03 06:14.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/18/03 06:51.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/20/03 06:51.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/22/03 06:07. Although the sky was already fairly bright, the dark side fo the Moon is faintly visible.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/26/03 18:35. This image was made less than 40 hours after the new Moon, so the crescent is very slender; nonetheless, the dark side of the Moon can be faintly seen through the twilight.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/27/03 18:57. Note the surface details visible on the dark side.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 10/31/03 21:34. To make the scale stand out against the rugged topography of the terminator, I shone a flashlight into the telescope.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/02/03 20:19.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/06/03 23:13.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/08/03 21:50. This image was made about 6.5 hours after full Moon; you may be able to see a hint of shadow at the bottom of the Moon's disk.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/10/03 06:51.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/12/03 05:38.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/14/03 07:24.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/16/03 07:19.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/18/03 11:49. Clouds and haze obscured the Moon; this image was taken through an orange filter and reproduced in black and white to improve the contrast between the Moon and the very bright sky.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/20/03 06:32.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/26/03 18:15. Note the earthlight on the dark side of the Moon.

Measurement of Moon's apparent diameter on 11/30/03 21:20. This image was made through fairly thick clouds, and over-exposed to show the scale.
