Dear Astro 626 Students,

    for tomorrow's meeting of Astronomy 626 (Galaxies), I suggest you
review Chapter 1 of Binney & Tremaine.  This is the most concise and
relevant introductory chapter in the three books we are using.
Chapters 1.1-1.3 of Sparke and Gallagher are similar but go into much
more detail on the properties of stars, and less detail on galaxies.
Chapter 1 of Binney & Merrifield offers an overview of the discovery
of galaxies; you may find it interesting if you like to know about the
history of the subject.
