Proposed curriculum
The proposed curriculum was amended and approved by the curriculum
committee:
Individual courses
- ASTR 110: Survey of Astronomy
- Informal survey shows most instructors teach full
syllabus.
- New course description adopted.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 110 Lab: Survey of Astronomy Lab
- Can justify support from UH for additional TA position.
- GWW to prepare questionnaire for current ASTR 110 class.
- JEB to prepare proposal and UHM-1 form.
- To be offered as core course.
- ASTR 120: Astronomical Origins
- Credit not offered for 110 and 120.
- AMB to prepare proposal and UHM-1 form.
- To be offered as core course.
- ASTR 130: Archaeoastronomy
- Number changed to 130 to separate from 120.
- EMH, KJM to prepare proposal and UHM-1 form.
- To be offered as writing-intensive course.
- ASTR 150: Voyage through the Solar System (also offered as
GG105)
- JEB contacting GG for permission to cross-list.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 240: Foundations of Astronomy
- Disappointing enrollment indicates failing course.
- Remove from rotation; will disappear in 2 yrs. unless revived.
- ASTR 281: Astrobiology (was Space Exploration)
- KJM, TCO to prepare new description and UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 399: Directed Study
- Add observation & experimentation to description.
- Remove all prerequisites except consent.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- Advanced lab will be offered as a section of ASTR 399.
- ASTR 427: Cosmology
- Proposal with UHM-1 form must explain how students are
evaluated.
- JEB, GWW to meet with 627 instructors to discuss workload and
grading policies.
- ASTR 430: The Solar System
- Proposal with UHM-1 form must explain how students are
evaluated.
- JEB, GWW to meet with 630 instructors to discuss workload and
grading policies.
- ASTR 626: Galaxies
- Remove ``Active galactic nuclei.'' from description.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 633: Astrophysical Techniques
- Remove numeral ``I'' from course title.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 635: Fundamentals of Astrophysics
- Remove ``(Alt. years)'' from description.
- JEB to prepare UHM-1 form.
- ASTR 640: General Relativity
- JRK to prepare proposal and UHM-1 form.
Cross-listings
We should ask Geology & Geophysics to cross-list ASTR 120 and
ASTR 430, ask Physics to cross-list ASTR 640, and ask Anthropology to
cross-list ASTR 130. It may not be necessary to wait until these
courses are actually in the catalog. Note: in catalog, cross-listings
are symmetrical; thus a cross-listing is as likely to direct a student
toward the astronomy program as it is to direct a student
away.
