Makua Rim Trail Hike, Sept 2006:
Dave, Sean and I decided to scout out the Makua Rim Trail on the leeward side of Oahu.
You need to get a special pass, as the trailhead is inside an Air Force Ranging Station's property.
Apparently there was a forest fire recently, so much of the flora was scorched or gone.
However, the air was heavy with the smell of smokey wood, possibly kiawe based on the smell, which made the hike that much more enjoyable.
Also, we found a few guava trees with ripe fruit, and one Lilikoi (Passion Fruit) vine that had dumped nearly a dozen fruit on the ground, ripe for the taking.
I brought 9 lilikoi home with me, a nice complement to breakfast or lunch while I was studying.

I was going to name this "Victory" but then I looked at it a little longer, and changed my mind

The fires kill, but new life springs up

When the guava trees burn, the fruits harden up, sealing the seeds in. I wonder if the seeds spread well this way

More fire and regrowth

The trees were scorched, but new ferns were already growing at their bases
