Mauna Kea, February 2008:
I was scheduled to observe the night of Feb 8th on the Subaru Telescope.
Unfortunately, I got weathered out: high humidity all night, with the roads beginning to ice over just after midnight, forcing us to evacuate.

However, I did get to meet Sean and Ian from One Week Job, and tag along on their tour of the summit.
Sean is travelling the world working jobs for one week (and donating his salary to charity), trying to find his passion, and that week he was an Astronomer at IfA Hilo.

One of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen.

The fog dispersing the thin band of light peaking between the land
and the clouds was so impressive I was moved to pull off on the side
of Saddle Road to take this picture.

Sometimes you forget the entire island is made of lava until you see a rock like this.

Not quite the Hawaii you see on postcards.
