Alternate Housing

The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is located approximately 27 miles north of the Kailua-Kona airport, on the rugged volcanic coastline of the Kohala Coast. This coastline hosts several large resorts. The meeting hotel is part of the Mauna Kea Beach Resort, and participants may wish to stay at the neighboring Mauna Kea Beach hotel. The next nearest resorts are about a 10-15 min drive south towards Kona, and the town of Waimea is a 20 min drive further north. Alternate accommodations are listed below by zones. Zone 1 covers South Kona, and would be approximately a 1 hour drive from the meeting hotel. Zone 2 is Kailua-Kona town (within 5-10 miles of the airport), and is approximately a 40-45 min drive to the meeting hotel. Zone 3 are those accommodations most near the meeting hotel, along the Kohala coast, and Zone 4 are for the facilities in Waimea. South Kona, near the Captain Cook region and Kealakakua bay offers lush settings in amongst coffee plantations, with accommodations often located on the the steep slopes of the volcano. Elevations can vary from sea level at the Kealakakua bay (famous for ocean kayaking with dolphins), to several thousand feet. The town of Kailua-Kona offers many economical small hotels, condominiums, and bed and breakfasts, and a thriving coastal town. The Kohala coast has the rugged beauty of more recent volcanic flows, with the large resorts located at sites of spectacular beaches. The town of Waimea is at higher elevation in the ranch lands, and can often be cool and misty.
